Licensing

Tradie licences by Australian state and trade

Licensing protects safety, insurance and legal compliance. Before hiring anyone for regulated work, verify the licence with the official state or territory authority.

By state

Where to check tradie licensing

Rules vary. Electrical and plumbing are heavily regulated nationally through state systems. Building, waterproofing, gasfitting and specialist work can vary by threshold and category.

NSW

Check licences through NSW Fair Trading for builders, electricians, plumbers and specialist contractors.

By trade

Trades where licence checks matter most

Electrical

Wiring, switchboards, safety switches, solar connection and EV chargers should be handled by licensed electricians.

Plumbing & gas

Water, drainage, sanitary plumbing, hot water and gasfitting often require licensed practitioners.

Building work

Licensing may depend on value thresholds, structural scope and contractor category in the relevant state.

Waterproofing

Bathroom, balcony and wet area failures are expensive. Check state rules before waterproofing work.

Painting

Some states license painting above specific job values. Check before larger repaint projects.

Roofing

Roof plumbing, metal roofing and structural roof work can have specific licence requirements.

Verification system

Before work starts, verify three things

Licence number, matching business name and the category that covers your exact job. Screenshots are handy. Paper trails are your friend.
